6. Low Notes & Bass Ledger Lines

Theory Lesson: Diving into the Deep Notes

Just like your right hand sometimes needs to reach high above the staff, your left hand needs to reach those deep, rumbly bass notes at the bottom of the piano. We use ledger lines here too—they just hang below the staff instead!

Mapping the Low Notes

The very bottom line of the Bass Clef is G, and the space hanging just beneath that line is F.
When we need to go even lower, we start drawing our ledger lines downward:

  • Hanging just below the staff: F
  • One line running right through the note: E
  • Hanging just below that first line: D
  • Two lines running right through the note: Low C

The "C" Landmark Trick

Sheet music actually has a really cool built-in symmetry that makes reading easier:

  • Two ledger lines above the Treble Clef is High C.
  • The single ledger line exactly in the middle is Middle C.
  • Two ledger lines below the Bass Clef is Low C.

By memorizing these three "C" landmarks, you save yourself from ever having to count lines. If you see a note sitting just below Low C, you don't have to count down from the staff—you instantly know it's a step down, making it a B!
