5. High Notes & Treble Ledger Lines

Theory Lesson: Reaching Above the Staff

The five lines of the Treble staff only cover a small section of the piano's higher notes. Because your keyboard goes much higher, we use something called Ledger Lines to write notes that float above the staff.
Think of them as temporary, mini-lines drawn just for that specific note to help you see how high it is.

Mapping the High Notes

The note sitting right on top of the Treble staff is G. If we want to go higher, we start adding our ledger lines:

  • Sitting right on top of the staff: G
  • One line running right through the note: A
  • Sitting on top of that first line: B
  • Two lines running right through the note: High C

Don't Count the Lines!

A huge trap for beginners is staring at a really high note and counting up line-by-line: "F, G, A, B, C..." By the time you figure it out, the song has already moved on!
The trick is to memorize a visual landmark—like knowing that High C always has two lines running through it. When you see a high note, just compare it to your landmark instead of counting from the bottom.

Self-Check Questions

  1. Question: If High C has two ledger lines running through it, what is the note sitting right on top of those two lines?

Answer: It is one step up: D.
  2. Question: What note has exactly three ledger lines running through it?
    Click to reveal answer
    Answer: E.
  3. Question: Why is it a bad idea to count ledger lines manually from the main staff?
    Click to reveal answer
Answer: It takes way too long! You should memorize a few visual landmarks (like High C) and just judge the distance from there.
