Course Overview
When playing jazz, thinking about music theory takes too long. You need your hands to react instantly to the sounds you hear, without second-guessing.
Tonal Foundations is a step-by-step, 30-lesson program designed to train your ears and hands to work together. While it's set up as a 30-day challenge, you can go completely at your own pace. Fly through a few lessons a day, or spend a whole week mastering one trick.
Who This Is For
- The Self-Taught Pianist: Players who want to stop "hunting and pecking" for the right notes.
- The Producer & Composer: Creators who want to figure out melodies and basslines quickly by ear.
- The Crossover Musician: Classical or traditional players moving to jazz who want to rely less on sheet music and more on their ears.
How to Practice
Time Commitment: Just 10 to 15 minutes a day.
Go at Your Own Pace: You aren't locked into a strict schedule. Do multiple lessons in one sitting, or spend a week on one challenge until you nail it.
Step 1: The Warm-Up
Before starting a new lesson, load the exercises from the last two days. Play them 5 to 10 times. This quick review wakes up your ears and gets your hands ready.
Step 2: The Workout
Load today's new lesson. Listen to the opening chords to get the key in your head, finish your practice loops, and you're done! Short, daily practice works much better than playing for hours once a week.
Pro-Tips for Success
Sing It Out
Don't just guess which key to press. When the app plays a note or chord, try humming or singing it out loud first. Connecting your voice to the sound is the fastest way to train your inner ear.
Don't Panic When It Gets Hard
When we introduce tricky, tense notes, your brain might feel a little tired. That's normal! If a lesson feels overwhelming, just turn on the visual guides or use the untimed mode until your hands get comfortable.
Make It Work For You
You can easily tweak any practice session inside the JazzPianoLab editor to match your current skill level.
If a lesson is too hard:
- Turn on "Wait For Key" mode: The app will pause and wait for you to play the right notes before moving on.
- Limit the Keys: Stick to just one or two easy keys (like C Major) to build confidence first.
- Hear the Chords More Often: Make the intro chords (cadence) play more often so you don't lose the key.
- Turn on Visual Guides: Highlight the correct keys on the screen if you get stuck (enable hints).
If a lesson is too easy:
- Switch to "Automatic" mode: Test your speed and force yourself to keep up without pausing.
- Turn on Random Keys: Challenge yourself by having the app randomly jump across all 12 keys.
- Speed It Up: Turn up the tempo, or set it to automatically get faster every time it repeats!

Add some color to your playing with the 2nd and 6th notes, and learn to feel the strong pull of the 7th note (the leading tone).
